Woebot Health, for instance, developed an AI chatbot designed alongside clinical psychologists from Stanford University. Their approach emphasizes transparency about the tool’s limitations and integrates human oversight into their development process.
“The most promising applications pair AI capabilities with human expertise,” explains Dr. Torous. “Tools that help therapists track patient progress between sessions or apps that teach basic coping skills while clearly stating they’re not substitutes for professional help—these have potential.”

Is the tool transparent about being AI-powered? Some apps disguise their automated nature.
Does the company share research validating their approach? Look for published studies, not just testimonials.
Who developed the tool? Check if mental health professionals were involved in its creation.
What happens to your data? Read privacy policies carefully before sharing personal struggles.
Does the app have a clear crisis protocol? AI can’t adequately handle suicidal ideation or emergencies.
“The promise of AI in mental health is accessibility and scalability,” notes Dr. Moreland-Capuia. “But we must balance innovation with safety and efficacy. The human connection remains central to healing.”
As the market continues growing, industry observers expect increased regulatory attention. Health Canada and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have both signaled interest in developing frameworks to evaluate AI health tools, though comprehensive rules remain years away.
In the meantime, the best approach might be a hybrid one—using digital tools to complement rather than replace human care. Support groups, teletherapy, and crisis lines staffed by trained professionals remain crucial resources for those in need.
“Technology can expand mental health access,” concludes Dr. Torous, “but healing typically happens through human connection, not algorithms alone.”
